Getting the job done.

We provide counseling, risk management, litigation management, and trial  services to individual and business clients.

When you need a lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area, call us.  Our offices are in the heart of San Francisco, and our lawyers have been practicing here for years.  We are entrenched in our community, and dedicated to providing the best legal counsel.

We’ve helped our clients navigate the unpredictable range of confrontation, backed by the trial experience it takes to intelligently evaluate options at every step. Sigrid Irias has represented clients throughout the greater Bay Area, including Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Tuolumne County, as well as in Southern California, and has served as outside general counsel to businesses and nonprofits.

Sigrid Irias has frequently been tapped by other attorneys to step in as cases approach trial, to analyze insurance issues, or to find a creative and different legal strategy to bring a case to a successful conclusion.  We’ve helped other firms – big and small – to achieve the best results through re-evaluation of legal theories and the facts: that overlooked nugget that can make the difference.

A San Francisco native, Sigrid graduated from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 1986, completed a clerkship with the San Francisco Superior Court, and since 2010 has taught as an adjunct professor at Hastings.  Before opening Irias Law, she worked for over two decades with the San Francisco office of a national law firm, where she practiced civil litigation defense, defending professional liability claims, commercial and business claims, personal injury and intentional tort claims.  In addition to defending litigated bad faith claims, she has provided coverage advice with respect to CGL, homeowners, wrap-around, D&O, and professional liability policies.

Sigrid Irias is AV Preeminent® Peer Review Rated.   You can learn more about the ratings here.

We have a close and regular relationship with the lawyers who are of counsel to our firm, reinforcing the platform for the work we do.

Prior results cannot guarantee a similar outcome, but some examples of our work, and the reason other attorneys turn to us in difficult cases, are these.

Representative Trials

  • Three-week bad faith trial in San Francisco.  Prevailed on behalf of defendant insurer in a case involving alleged bad faith invocation of a fire policy’s appraisal procedure.
  • Two week medical  malpractice jury trial in San Mateo County.  Prevailed on behalf of defendant orthopedic surgeon in a case involving alleged negligence during orthopedic surgery and follow-up treatment.
  • Three week court trial in San Francisco.  Prevailed on behalf of directors of a nonprofit who had been accused of conversion, conspiracy, and Corporations Code violations.
  • One week jury trial in San Mateo (concluded via motion for nonsuit), defending a product manufacturer against claims that product defects resulted in burns.
  • One week court trial in San Francisco County.  Prevailed on behalf of a charitable hospital in a will contest.

Creative Resolutions

  • Took over the defense of an individual sued by a major department store chain for over $300,000 allegedly owed on a consumer credit account shortly before trial.  After deposing two key witnesses for the plaintiff department store chain, convinced the corporate plaintiff to dismiss all claims and return property that had been repossessed in exchange for a waiver of malicious prosecution claims.
  • Extricated a small business tenant from protracted a multi-party commercial lease dispute via summary judgment, after taking the deposition of one key witness.
  • Obtained summary judgment on statute of limitations grounds on a claim for over $7 million by establishing that the plaintiff had not acted reasonably in the face of publicly known facts, and therefore could not invoke the delayed discovery rule.

Representation of and Advice and Counsel for Nonprofits

Our work for nonprofit organizations has included the following.

  • Appointed general counsel for San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association under several different presidents of the Association.
  • Negotiation of an MOU between a California public school district and a nonprofit, enabling the collaborative launch of an elementary school tutoring program.
  • Advice and counsel on employment issues for a Bay Area nonprofit organization.
  • Representation of several individual elderly volunteer officers and directors of a San Francisco nonprofit, prevailing on all claims at trial and again on appeal.

Helping Individuals Get Justice

Prior results cannot guarantee a similar outcome, but here are some examples of the range of work our lawyers have done for individuals.

  • Obtained reversals of insurers’ initial denials of coverage to policyholders under homeowners’ policies for third party claims.
  • Obtained a six figure confidential settlement of a defamation claim, with a retraction and written apology, on behalf of individuals who were the target of a letter-writing campaign.
  • Won a three-week trial on all claims against four individuals sued on a variety of intentional tort theories.
  • Extricated an individual commercial real estate broker from protracted multi-party litigation involving claims of over $1,000,000 in lost profit by the sellers of a commercial enterprise via motion practice.
  • Won a two-week jury trial on behalf of an individual physician sued for alleged negligence in orthopedic surgery.
  • Successfully defended a family against an eviction action, allowing them to remain in the home where they had lived for decades.
  • Obtained administrative closure of removal proceedings that the Department of Homeland Security had litigated against a girl from Central America for five years in federal immigration court, which has allowed her to remain in the Bay Area with her family.
